Units/techs I would completely ignore are Nordic Warriors/Nordic Elite warriors. Chosen Warriors do not wreck inf as fast as Nordic Axe Warriors/Huscarls do but at least do not die if you fart at them. If you wan't something similar to the Huscarls you have to tech military quite a bit and unlock nordic axe warriors, but IMO you do far better with some quick civic tech and a small amount of Chosens/Spear masters/Heroic cav in your armies. Requires deep military tech though to unlock the upgrade. infantry (the usual ones are 70base and only 20 ap,) so having these guys throwing their precursors and then move into shield wall even gives Uar-Elites a good fight. These guys are even more durable and have acces to the rare 75ap dmg precursor with +15 bonus vs.

I personally recommend to rush for mead hall and hall of elders ASAP (though getting the tech reducing infantry upkeep by 10% doesnt hurt) and your are able to field armies of very good quality: Backbone line of sturdy hearthguards, two Chosen warriors and two spearmasters on the flanks and saxon mounted warband with support of 1 or 2 heroic cav inspire aura. Heroic Cavalry (heavy) comes by the same tech und buildings that also give you acces to chosen warriors and spear masters. The biggest difference to the other Norse is you do not need decades of teching military to get your hands on proper cav: You have unique saxon mounted warband, very good medium melee cav available from t2 cattle somethings, it slightly worse than pre nerf germanic horsemen and they where not nerfed. The Unique Saxon units allow you to tech civic most of the time and still field a good army. Saxons: Your assumption was right, going for hearthguards as backbone inf is the best way. Best battle strat would be too hold the line with their awesome sword troops and Spears and flank with cav and hit em in the rear. Both the saxons and franks have really good cavalry too, particularly the shock cav for the Franks and Melee cav for the saxons. Both the franks and saxons have superior defensive infantry though, Saxons final upgrade for the hearth troop line and the franks final on the sword heerban line are far better than anything the jutes have of the same class. I haven't played much of either faction in campaign but neither have assault infantry comparable to huscarls, besides the cheap nordic axes that all nordic factions get. Since the Saxons use the Nordic roster, I assume they have access to pretty much the same units as Viking **** except Hirdmen and Huscarls, and perhaps their main line infantry should be Hearth Guards in the midgame? Is there an equivalent to the striking power of the Huscarls for them or the Franks?Īny other major strengths or weaknesses between the two factions I should be aware of before deciding which to play? I would probably be using the same campaign strategy for the Saxons as I used for the Jutes (take Britain), and for the Franks I'd probably align with the Romans and help defend their borders.
